This is a self-initiated cover project inspired by A Wizard of Earthsea, one of my favourite books. I first read it when I was young and have returned to it many times since, so I already had a strong personal connection to its world and atmosphere.
Unlike some of my other projects, this cover did not require a long sketching stage. I saw the main composition and colour palette quite clearly from the beginning and developed the final image from that initial idea.
I knew that I wanted to include a dragon. Although the dragon is not the central character of the story, the image of a creature as enormous as a mountain rising above the ruins of a city is one of the most powerful and memorable moments in the book.
I placed the human figure much lower in the composition to emphasize the dragon’s immense size and create a feeling of awe.
