A glimpse into a hidden and sacred world that feels slightly forbidden. The collection should evoke emotion that is both cozy and mystical, with a sense of forgotten magic and a subtle touch of mystery.
This pattern collection is inspired by The Last Unicorn (1982), a fantasy film that made a big impression on me as a child. I wanted to capture the same feeling of wonder, sadness, and magic, but with a more botanical look.

Instead of working digitally, I painted the motifs with watercolour. It takes more time, but it brings more depth, texture, and life into the artwork.

The natural granulation of Schmincke Horadam Supergranulation paints, especially Tundra Violet, was very important for creating the unicorn’s mysterious coat.
How I worked

I started with simple monochrome sketches to plan the composition. Then I added more detail to some parts, especially the unicorns, because they are the main focus of the collection. The first sketch was large, so I cut it into A4 pieces, printed them, and taped them back together to keep working on it.
Next, I transferred the drawing onto watercolour paper and painted every element one by one. I worked on 100% cotton, cold-pressed paper, which gave the paintings a strong texture. After finishing the watercolour work, I scanned all the pieces, carefully cut them out, and built the final layout in Photoshop. I also created a separate watercolour texture for the background to add depth and atmosphere to the design.
This way the collection kept the soft look of watercolor and the feeling I wanted from the start. It is my way to bring back the wonder of childhood and to share a small piece of forgotten magic.
